A new volume in our De Gruyter book series has been published and is now available in open access. (A)synchronic (Re)actions: Crises and Their Perception in Hittite History by Marta Pallavidini, our former fellow, examines how crises were perceived in Hittite Anatolia (1650–1180 BCE) – by the Hittites themselves, by neighboring polities, and by modern historians. Drawing on four key case studies, the book introduces the concepts of crisis and (a)synchronicity to show how perceptions of crisis can vary even within the same time period. Hittite responses to crises, it argues, were sometimes delayed or retrospective, while modern historical perspectives, despite temporal distance, may allow for a more synchronous understanding of events in some cases. By interrogating the multi-temporality of the (a)synchronic perception of crises, this volume aims to redefine crises in Hittite Anatolia.
