Chronoi Talks: “Camilla's Traces: Movement, Time and Translation in the Vergilian Tradition” (Hybrid)

November 17, 2022

3 - 4 pm (CET)

Venue: Einstein Center Chronoi (Otto-von-Simson-Straße 7, 14195 Berlin)

Prof. Dr. Karin Kukkonen and Prof. Dr. Eva von Contzen

Camilla, the ‘swift-footed’ Volscian queen from Vergil’s Aeneid, is a time traveller. In this talk, we trace her appearances from Vergil’s epic, in medieval and early modern translations of the Aeneid to the 20th century. We are especially interested in the intersections of time, movement, and narrative. Bringing together narratology and literary history, we investigate the time of narration vs. narrated time, temporal leaps, embodied movement, and their larger relevance for questions of temporality.
