How do moments of prayer generate insights into hidden knowledge during the Second Temple period? This paper will explore the role of (un)knowing within the final eschatological vision of the book of Daniel (chs. 10–12), as prayer transforms into a revelatory experience for Daniel. The case of Daniel receiving hidden knowledge underscores the human capacity to know and understand.
Prayer disrupts the constant progress of time, enabling introspection and renewal. This renewal manifests as revelation, which is an active, visceral, and physical experience. The physical reactions during prayer assist in advancing visionary experiences toward understanding hidden truths. Therefore, gaining access to this knowledge is not straightforward; the recipient must fully engage and dedicate their entire self, much like in prayer, to truly receive.
This paper draws on recent research about prayer and performance, examining how prayer and revelation intersect to uncover hidden knowledge. Through comparative scholarship and the integration of history and liturgy, Sarah Wisialowski will analyze how the revelatory experiences in Daniel 10–12 enable the hidden aspects of prayer to become accessible to individuals like Daniel.
