Time is one of the most frequently discussed man made concepts reflected in the everyday life and culture for thousands of years. On one hand, this obsession with time is extremely banalised and on the other it evoked the most radical thinking, so as a consequence, there are million of songs, movies or books that are dealing with time, and even some prominent thinkers were established due to their interaction with this existential issue. In such a plentitude of millenial ideas and verses the question appears, is there anything new that can be said on time? The answer is intriguingly positive…particularly when it concerns the prehistoric time.
The scholars from different disciplines are studying the time and are trying to apply more thorough elaboration of this rather abstract concept that has been present since prehistory. Philosophy and anthropology employed more theoretical, but substantial perspectives on temporality, while ethnology recorded a plethora of diverse perceptions of time among different societies. On the other hand, the archaeologists are reaching out to natural sciences in order to gain exact knowledge on the chronology and to reconstruct the time as it was in the (distant) past. This multitude of approaches in the understanding of temporality generate a novel panorama that provides a more solid scientific platform for the elaboration of the (pre)historic time.
Consequently, this lecture will encompass the two unrelated notions of prehistoric time, one of the modern observers (scholars in humanities) and the other of the actual people living in prehistory (particularly the first farming societies). This will consider the theoretical explication of temporality and the employment of exact methods in the comprehension of time, as well as the data from archaeological sites and material culture that could reflect the perception of time among the agricultural communities in the Balkans.
