Chronoi Talks: “Absolute Time and History in Dionysius Petavius” (Hybrid)

Prof. Dr. Johannes Zachhuber

February 8, 2024

3 - 4 pm (CET)

Prof. Dr. Johannes Zachhuber

From the late sixteenth century, European scholars revolutionised chronography by combining astronomical evidence with historical and philological information. Underlying this effort was a novel concept of time as a homogeneous continuum by means of which all conceivable past events could be defined and ordered. One of the main participants in this development was the French Jesuit, Dionysius Petavius (Denis Pétau, 1583-1652). Characteristic for his approach is his joint interest in time, chronography, and history. In my talk, I will discuss Petavius’ contribution to the introduction of absolute time and the impact this had on his understanding of history.
