Chronoi Talks: “Unity in Diversity: The ‘Historia Animalium’ on Synchronous Changes in Animal Bodies and Natural Phenomena” (Hybrid)
Dr. Giouli Korobili
April 18, 2024
3 - 4 pm (CET)
This talk focuses on selected passages presenting co-temporal occurrences in animal bodies, weather phenomena and stellar movements found in Aristotle’s Historia Animalium. Habits such as migration, breeding, rearing of young, and procuring a due supply of food are adapted, according to Aristotle, so as to suit cold and heat, and the variations of the seasons, while physiological changes such as change of colour or weight occur at transitional periods throughout a year. Does Aristotle endorse a concept of synchronicity in his explanations of natural changes of living bodies and the environmental conditions, and, if so, is synchronicity a principle affecting life on earth? Do these simultaneous occurrences constitute a cause-and-effect phenomenon? If not, how does his view of natural teleology fit the picture?
