Biography

Nikolai Andreevich Makarov is the director of the Institute of Archaeology, Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Editor-in-chief of the journal "Kratkiye soobshcheniya Instituta Arkheologii (Brief communications of the Institute of Archaeology”,  http://ksia.iaran.ru/). He is a member of the Public Council of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Council on Science and Education under the President of the Russian Federation, and the Presidium of the Russian Historical Society. 


He has led multiple excavations in the central and northern regions of Russia, such as the Onega-Sukhon and Suzdal expedition of the IA RAS, and participated in the Russian-Palestinian expedition in Jericho. He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (since 2005) and the American Archaeological Institute (since 2009). 


His research interests are the archaeology and history of medieval Russia and Finland, in particular the archaeology of rural settlements; Christian antiquities; the colonization of northern Europe; and the preservation of cultural heritage.
